Dam Reconstruction

This photo was taken on May 1, 2021. In the foreground is the dam which was fully closed on that date as is required. There are no leaks allowing additional water to go into the stream below. The spillway is behind the dam. It is a permanent structure and cannot be adjusted.

Here is a closer look at the spillway also on May 1. You can see some water is flowing over it and into the ditch below. You will also note the red arrow pointing to a white mark on the concrete. That mark is an estimate of the level of water normally flowing over the spillway this time of year. This year the level of water flowing over is similar to mid July. As of May 1, Crooked Lake was about 12” below normal Springtime levels due to inadequate rainfall.

Blue Green Algae

Blue Green Algae was found near Casey's Cove Marina during Fall of 2018. Attached is a fact sheet to provide you with information. A couple of important points include washing any area of human skin exposure to the algae with plenty of soap and water. And keep your pets out of the water. If a pet has been exposed, try to wash the algae off as best you can. You may want to contact your Veterinarian for more information. Read a Blue Green Algae Fact Sheet

Hemorrhagic Disease

A deer was spotted jumping into the lake on the second basin in early July 2018. The animal died soon after and we learned it may have been afflicted with a disease commonly called "blue tongue". According to Lance Tresenriter, DNR Wildlife Biologist for this area, deer can be tested for the disease, but only within 24 hours of the animal's death. Lance's phone number is 260 367 2186.

Republic Services Contract

Our previous garbage/recycling contract expired on June 30, 2018. We CLA Members currently pay $48.66 per quarter, and we were able to negotiate a new 3 year agreement with Republic Services effective on July 1 with no increase in rates for the first two years! Republic is allowed up to a 5% rate increase for the third year. As you may know, this service includes a large dumpster for garbage pick up on Mondays, and a large recycle dumpster for recyclables picked up twice a month. If you are not a Republic customer and want to take advantage of this great deal for members of the Crooked Lake Association, you can call them at 800-876-9001.

On a related matter regarding Republic Services, some of our members have reported being charged a higher rate than $48.66 per quarter. If you have been a CLA member and have had to pay more than $48.66/quarter, you can ask for an adjustment. Contact Megan Powell at 260-442-3234 for the details.
